  4. population (1987) 1,543,000. Minsk dates from
  5. the 11th century and has in turn been held by
  6. Lithuania, Poland, Sweden, and Russia. The
  7. city was devastated by Napoleon 1812 and
  8. heavily damaged by Germans forces 1944. Mass
  9. graves from between 1937 and 1941 of more
  10. than 30,000 victims of Joseph Stalin's terror
  11. were discovered in a forest outside Minsk
  12. 1989.
